PREVIOUS EVENTS

Dunelm English Mock Trial Championships

Durham University Bar Society hosted the first national mock trial competition between eight of the highest ranking law schools across the country; Durham, Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, LSE, York, Nottingham, and Newcastle.

The competition span three rounds, was judged by 6 KC's and held within Durham. It was our honour to host William Clegg KC and Dexter Dias KC to judge the semi-finals, and Lady Hale to judge the final round in Durham Crown Court.

The event was attended by over 150 spectators, including students, mentors, and professors of Durham Law School.

Followed by a food and drinks reception and networking event, the event was a great success.

Life at the Bar

Durham University Bar Society's very own life at the Bar series has been an overwhelming success with  nine fantastic events. These have included:

  • Life at the Intellectual Property Bar with Martin Howe KC from 8 New Square Chambers

  • Life at the Family Bar Panel with Parklane Plowden Chambers

  • Life at the Property Bar with Professor Chris Bevan from 4-5 Gray's Inn Square

  • Life in International Law with Susie Alegre from Doughty Street Chambers

  • Life at the Public Law Bar with Alex Williams from Cornerstone Chambers 

  • Life at the Family Bar with Olivia Choudhury from Deans Court

  • Life at the Criminal Bar with Gemma Davies, Katherine Dunn, and Rebecca Brown

  • Life at the Commercial Bar with Alexander Brown from One Essex Court 

Michaelmas Mock Trial

Durham University Bar Society hosts a Michaelmas Mock Trial each academic year. This is an internal competition which provides an opportunity for those both new, and well accustomed, to advocating in Mock Trials.

Consisting of opening speeches, examinations-in-chief, cross-examinations, and closing speeches in front of esteemed judges, the event is always a massive success!

The past two Michaelmas Mock Trials have been sponsored by Parklane Plowden Chambers with prize money and a mini-pupillage being awarded to the winning advocates!

Bar Society Balls

The annual Durham University Bar Society Ball provides the last event of each academic year.

 

With themes ranging from 'A Murder Mystery' to 'Dining with the Legal Stars' the Ball provides the perfect opportunity to dress up and celebrate the success of the society and its members throughout the academic year!

Made possible by volunteering members of the society, the annual Ball is representative of the societies community spirit and commitment.

Business and Property Court Forum

Durham University Bar Society has close ties with the Newcastle Business and Property Court Forum. Hosted by Specialist Business & Property Court Circuity Judge HHJ Kramer, and attended by current and former Vice-Chancellors, the event has enabled students an invaluable insight into the Business and Property Courts.

Advocacy Afternoon with HHJ Adkin

Durham Crown Court hosted an 'Advocacy Afternoon' with Durham University Bar Society.

 

This provided students with an opportunity to advocate a Plea in Mitigations in front of HHJ Adkin, as well as a tour of the court and Q+A. 

HHJ Adkin is open to Marshalls involved with the society!

London Trip

Durham University bar Society provides 25 students the opportunity to have an all inclusive legal london experience each year! 

 

This includes the following four experiences:

 

  • Tours of key legal locations, including the Supreme Court and Royal Courts of Justice.

  • The opportunity to watch a high profile criminal case in the Old Bailey.

  • Lunch with esteemed barristers.

  • Dinner and mixed messes at Gray’s Inn

Inter-varsity Nottingham Legal Triathlon 

A collaboration between Nottingham Law Society and Durham University Bar Society consisted of a tripartite competition.

 

This included a Mock Trial, Moot, and Negotiation and was kindly partnered with KCH Garden Square Chambers.

The society frequently partners with other Universities for advocacy competitions, including York, Oxford, the University of Sydney, and Cambridge. If your University would like to partner with us please get in touch by email: bar.society@durham.ac.uk

Networking Event at Trinity Chambers

Durham University Bar Society has a strong partnership with Trinity Chambers. 

It was fantastic to visit the Newcastle Chambers and Trinity barristers at a networking event provided by the Chambers!
